#12/100 Reasons I Blog4Peace/ Teach Peace

– Alice Walker

“What’s done to children, they will do to society.”
– Karl Menninger

I found these quotes at http://www.teachforpeace.org/

"If we do not teach our children peace, someone else will teach them violence."
-Coleman McCarthy, author of I'd Rather Teach Peace

"I would teach peace rather than war, love rather than hate."
-Albert Einstein

"A culture of peace will be achieved when citizens of the world understand global problems;
have the skills to resolve conflict constructively;
know and live by international standards of human rights, gender and racial equality; appreciate cultural diversity;
and respect the integrity of the Earth.
Such learning can not be achieved without intentional, sustained and systematic education for peace."
-Global Campaign for Peace Education

#13/100 Reasons I Blog4Peace/Progressives

As those of you who have read my blog a few times or know me personal ...I spent a long time in my life defying labels or tags for myself. I have been asked "what are you?" so many times as a young mixed child, it made me very sensitive of liking labels tags etc .  I do remember thinking as a 9 year old child if America was a "melting pot" Why does it matter "What I AM?"

America has traditionally been referred to as a "melting pot," welcoming people from many different countries, races, and religions, all hoping to find freedom, new opportunities, and a better way of life.
I found this definition of Progressives at Wiki after reading a letter in our local paper that used the word 'Progressives"  to tag (name call) someone they did not care for ...
First here is the letter to the editor that stirred me this morning,  I said after reading this letter  "I read our local paper just to see what kind of political people out there I don't want to be like." LOL I read our editorials just to get my blood boiling I think !This is a man's response to someone that wrote against our sheriff...
Folks, I am a citizen of Lee County and you sure don’t speak for me, my family, my friends and a great many of my acquaintances! But Progressives often assume power.

We applaud our Sheriff’s change of perspective. We abhor the waste and violence brought upon us by the interloping, law-breaking illegal aliens! We wonder at the motivation of individuals that decry attempts by legislators, law enforcement or general citizens to uphold the law.

There are three things that hold us together as a nation: Language, Borders and Culture — and all are under grave assault due to illegal aliens!

When I read the last part there I just flipped out !
There are three things that hold us together as a nation: Language, Borders and Culture — and all are under grave assault due to illegal aliens!
What the heck ?? What happened to Freedom , the Melting Pot ?
okay so that is why I had to learn what Progressives are?

The Progressive Movement began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in cities with settlement workers and reformers who were interested in helping those facing harsh conditions at home and at work. The reformers spoke out about the need for laws regulating tenement housing and child labor. They also called for better working conditions for women.
The term progressivism emerged in reference to a more general response to the vast changes brought by industrialization: an alternative to the traditional conservative response to social and economic issues and, despite being associated with left-wing politics, to the various more radical streams of communism or anarchism.
Political parties, such as the Progressive Party, organized at the start of the 20th century, and progressivism made great strides under American presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Lyndon Baines Johnson.[1]
American progressives tend to support international economics: they advocate progressive taxation and oppose the growing influence of corporations. Progressives are in agreement on an international scale with left-liberalism in that they support organized labor and trade unions, they usually wish to introduce a living wage, and they often support the creation of a universal health care system.

I found an interesting blog called Growing Roots ‘From Below and to the Left’
that had a 7 page letter written by  attorney and historian Staughton Lynd

I enjoyed reading the letter he wrote and learned a great deal!Being a gardener I liked the title too :>) The part that really stuck with me was something he says toward the end of his letter.
LIFE AMONG THE 99 PERCENT
I am running out of time so I will just say this one more thing.
In the late 1960s it was the thing to do to call police officers "pigs." I objected at the time, and I strongly object now.

If we wish truly to be the 99 percent, we cannot call each other names. Nurses, teachers, and firemen want to repeal Senate Bill 5, but so do policemen and correctional officers.

Barbara Deming had a good way of putting it. She said: "Nature gives us two hands. With one of them, we must hold up a barrier to those we perceive as oppressors, and say: No further, or only over my body. With the other hand we must reach out to those same persons and say: Join us."

So am I a Progressive ? I am not ready for that tag either ... I will just keep reading and learning ... in the meantime I will stick with the label/tag I like the most!

#14/100 Reasons I Blog4Peace/US child abuse/deaths

As I look for a topic to write about for my "100 reasons to blog for Peace", I check the news and headlines to see what is being talked about.
I was told by a friend that if I were going to write about Peace I should stay away from politics? The more I read what is happening in this world I realize Politics has a Lot to do with Peace or lack of.
I try to look for topics that need changing for the world to be at peace or at the least a little better. Hopefully to help spread the word and hope of a brighter tomorrow !
Today I see an article about a topic folks avoid talking about if they can. God knows it is hard to stomach and think about..
Child Abuse , we don't like to talk about it, so of course the media doesn't talk about it unless it is a celebrity or on page 8 somewhere?  When I started reading the stats in the first article it blew my mind , it made me want to throw up.
I am a survivor, so it hits even closer to me.
I have copied some of the parts that really woke me up and  the links I found these stats hoping you will go read the rest too.
Finding images to go with the story was almost more than I could bear at one sitting. I wanted to cry , scream , even shout , "what the hell is wrong with our country?"

Why is Child Abuse So Much More Pervasive in the U.S.

Read more at: Eric Steinman

The fact is, as child abuse exists around the globe, it is the first world, highly industrialized, United States that boasts some of the highest rates of child abuse in the world. Here is a statistic for you courtesy of the BBC: Over the past 10 years, more than 20,000 American children are believed to have been killed in their own homes by family members. That is nearly four times the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the child maltreatment death rate in the US is triple Canada’s and 11 times that of Italy.

Many legislators choose to blame parents for the abuse (as no abusive parent should remain blameless), but aren’t they neglecting to see that the state, as well as the federal government, is complicit in fostering an environment perfect for such abuse.

this was a headline hard to read and the article was even  more shocking , I only copied some of it here to get folks looking ...
America's child death shame
Michael Petit is the president of Every Child Matters. He served as the state of Maine's human services commissioner, and as deputy of the Child Welfare League of America.

Over the past 10 years, more than 20,000 American children are believed to have been killed in their own homes by family members. That is nearly four times the number of US soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The child maltreatment death rate in the US is triple Canada's and 11 times that of Italy. Millions of children are reported as abused and neglected every year. Why is that
 Downward spiral
Part of the answer is that teen pregnancy, high-school dropout, violent crime, imprisonment, and poverty - factors associated with abuse and neglect - are generally much higher in the US.
Further, other rich nations have social policies that provide child care, universal health insurance, pre-school, parental leave and visiting nurses to virtually all in need.
In the US, when children are born into young families not prepared to receive them, local social safety nets may be frayed, or non-existent. As a result, they are unable to compensate for the household stress the child must endure.
In the most severe situations, there is a predictable downward spiral and a child dies. Some 75% of these children are under four, while nearly half are under one.
Geography matters a lot in determining child well-being. Take the examples of Texas and Vermont.
Texas prides itself in being a low tax, low service state. Its per capita income places it in the middle of the states, while its total tax burden - its willingness to tax itself - is near the bottom.
Vermont, in contrast, is at the other extreme. It is a high-tax, high-service state.

Please take time to go read the articles in the full story, or just use that time to share this story to others .
Let's spread the word that we want a change for the children of tomorrow!
The leaders of today have to Stand up for the children Today because those children are going to lead the world in the future...
May Peace and Blessings be upon You!

#15/100 Reasons I Blog4Peace/ Peace builders

American activist Tom Burke talks about intimidation and harassment tactics by the FBI directed at him, his family, and other peace activists and other activists. The presentation was part of a panel discussion on "Resisting Profiling, Preemptive Prosecution and Prisoner Abuse, A citizens hearing to confront repression of human rights and civil liberties by the criminal justice system." The event was July 16, 2011 in Detroit, Michigan (USA).

The panel presentation focused on how the 'War on Terror' climate and its repressive legal practices in the criminal justice system have affected civil liberties and human rights of Arab, Muslim, African American, South Asian, and all immigrant communities and the broader social justice movement.

“This war should have been stopped long ago, but we can’t undo history. “ said Robert Moore, the executive director of Coalition for Peace. “We can let the government know that it needs to stop now.”
During the vigil Moore said “$120 billion a year is being spent each year on 100,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan. This is taking money away from job creation and other urgent needs here at home.”
“We want to keep the soldiers in people’s minds,” Deckhart said. “The ultimate support of our troops is bringing them back home for good.”

#16/100 Reasons I Blog4Peace/ Peace Prayers

I read a sign held by a Peace activist that has stuck in my mind, I had hoped to find the picture somewhere but did not. So I tried making one.

I found all these prayers looking around at  http://www.care2.com/greenliving/
It does not seem to matter what religion you are or are not.
Having Peace in our lives is what we all know we need.

There is something about the cadence, the rhythm, and the grounded energy of prayers like these that make us feel more peaceful just by reading them.
Share these beautiful Native American prayers for peace with your friends.

Let Us Know Peace
Let us know peace.
For as long as the moon shall rise,
For as long as the rivers shall flow,
For as long as the sun will shine,
For as long as the grass shall grow,
Let us know peace.

O Great Spirit of our Ancestors,
I raise my pipe to you, to your messengers the four winds, and to Mother Earth who provides for your children.
Give us the wisdom to teach our children to love, to respect, and to be kind to each other so that they may grow with peace in mind.
Let us learn to share all the good things that you provide for us on this Earth.

Buddhist prayers
May all beings everywhere plagued
with sufferings of body and mind
quickly be freed from their illnesses.
May those frightened cease to be afraid,
and may those bound be free.
May the powerless find power,
and may people think of befriending
one another.
May those who find themselves in trackless,
fearful wilderness–
the children, the aged,
the unprotected–
be guarded by beneficial celestials,
and may they swiftly attain Buddhahood.

Evoking the presence of the great compassion, let us fill our hearts with our own compassion–towards ourselves and towards all living beings.
Let us pray that all living beings realize that they are all brothers and sisters, all nourished from the same source of life.

We are all children of the Great Spirit, we all belong
to Mother Earth. Our planet is in great trouble and
if we keep carrying old grudges and do not work
together, we will all die.
–Chief Seattle

Grandfather,
Look at our brokenness.
We know that in all creation
Only the human family
Has strayed from the Sacred Way.
We know that we are the ones
who are divided
And we are the ones
who must come back together
to walk in the Sacred Way.
Grandfather,
Sacred One,
Teach us love, compassion, and honor
that we may heal the earth
and heal each other.
–Objibway people of Canada
 as always I will pray...
May Peace and Blessing be upon You!

Yell Fire!
That is what I was taught to scream in the street if someone was assaulting me not Rape ...?
Why because "Folks don't want to get involved !"?? I was about the age of 10 the first time I heard this. Nearly 40 years later things have not changed that much it seems. If anything I feel people still have a hard time getting involved if there is no Gain.

#20/100 Reasons I Blog4Peace/Greensboro Peace

I decided to see what was going on in the big city of Greensboro ,NC , where my Mom lives.

I heard the president was going to be there over the weekend and I knew there was suppose to be an "Occupy Together" going on too? Well it turned out he refused to speak to them ?

Then I start noticing the other headlines there???

The crime is getting insane there. Especially if you are looking for a safe place for a Senior citizen on a fixed income .She has been trying to get GHA to help find her something Safe on a lower level home with a little yard she could grow flowers?? But that has not gone so well?  So here are just some things I found in the headlines

Stressful weekend for police

Another homicide in Greensboro? Police are investigating a shooting death on Randleman Road this morning.

They must be exhausted after an extremely stressful weekend: thousands of visitors in town for N.C. A&T Homecoming, which included a parade Saturday morning; the Occupy Greensboro march and campout; and way too much crime.
Two nonfatal shootings at a nightclub early Sunday.
Another nonfatal shooting Saturday night.
An armed robbery at a gas station early Sunday.
A stabbing early Sunday.
Another armed robbery and assault Saturday evening.
Forgive them if they doze off during the speechmaking.
